I highly admire the beauty of craftsmanship

Look into the heart and soul of consultant Wouter van Munster (44) and you will discover a deeply rooted passion and fascination for craftsmanship and fine mechanics. We talk to our client and friend Wouter about the origins of this passion and his love for watches.

1. Wouter loves watches because…
“I admire people who can make something out of nothing with their hands. Craftsmanship to me is about skills and creating stuff. It’s also about understanding how things work. When I was still a young boy I fixed my classmate’s bicycles. I took them completely apart, fixed them and put them back together.”

2. Wouter’s favourite brand is…
“Jaeger-LeCoultre and IWC. Both brands have a fascinating history that shows immense dedication to creating the perfect watch. IWC combines my love for subdued beauty and perfectly precise mechanics and that’s why my first real watch was an Aquatimer Cousteau Divers.”

3. Wouter’s favourite watch is…
“I will answer this but first I have to tell you about another passion of mine. I have always been fascinated by the world of aviation. Pilots who soldered lugs to a pocket watch, put a strap on it to wear it in a cockpit, that kind of stuff. But I’m also fascinated by other equipment they used: Jeeps for instance. That’s why I bought a 1943 army Jeep and restored it completely in WWII British RAF livery. That car led me to the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch reference 5004. I think the 5004 as it perfectly integrates steel and leather and history, is the best looking of all the Pilot’s Watches.”

4. Wouter looks like a watchmaker in the picture because…
“I was invited by Ace Jewelers to visit the IWC manufacture in Schaffhausen and there I was given the opportunity to work on a pocket watch movement. That was quite the experience. That also goes for the manufacture itself. The history and the pride of the people working at the manufacture was impressive if not to say almost mystic.”

5. Wouter shops at Ace because…
“I had been looking at the Big Pilot for quite a while and when I saw it at Ace & Spyer I went inside. It just clicked with David and Alon and I bought the watch there and then. To my surprise Alon then invited me to visit the manufacture in Schaffhausen and we stayed in contact ever since.”
